Violence erupted on Saturday at the venue of the state congress of a faction of the All Progressives Congress in Ondo State, held at the B. T. O hall, Akure, the state capital as some youths suspected to be political thugs invaded the venue and disrupted the exercise.
Several members of the party were beaten, including a member of the House of Representatives who represents Idanre/Ifedore Federal constituency, Bamidele Baderinwa. Some journalists too were not spared by the suspected thugs.
No fewer than 40 people were injured during the violence
Scores of men of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, who were at the venue of the parallel congress could not do anything to stop the fracas.
The exercise which started at about, 9am was going on smoothly but the exercise stopped when the thugs arrived at the venue in six vehicles with dangerous weapons and started throwing stones at everyone in sight. The window glasses of the hall were smashed with stones.
The federal lawmaker had his white native dress torn to pieces. He was however whisked away from the scene by his security aides.
After chasing away the factional members, the thugs damaged some of the vehicles parked at the premises of the venue and set bonfires. Shortly after the fracas, they left the scene.
However, the state congress organized by the state executive of the party holding at the International Events Center, Akure is currently ongoing peacefully.
